On April 26th, 2024, Mr. Rob van der Gulik, Deputy Secretary General of the European Association for Energy Storage and Transportation (EAEST), attended the King’s Day celebrations held in Nanjing, China. During the event, Mr. van der Gulik formally signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO) on behalf of EAEST.

This newly established partnership will strengthen bilateral cooperation between Europe and China in the energy sector. Key areas of focus include:

  1. Deepening collaboration and information exchange concerning energy storage technologies, policies, and market developments between the two regions.
  2. Facilitating technical knowledge sharing and joint research initiatives to drive innovation in energy storage solutions.
  3. Co-organizing promotional campaigns, seminars, and networking events to raise awareness about the importance of energy storage in achieving a sustainable energy transition.
  4. Exploring potential business opportunities and partnerships between European and Chinese companies operating in the energy storage value chain.

By leveraging their combined expertise and networks, EAEST and NBSO aim to contribute to high-quality growth and development in the energy storage industry for both European and Chinese stakeholders. This agreement underscores the shared commitment to accelerating the adoption of clean energy technologies and fostering a greener future.

“We are delighted to join forces with NBSO in this strategic partnership,” stated Mr. van der Gulik. “By combining our strengths, we can unlock new synergies that will benefit the energy storage ecosystem in both Europe and China.”

The signing ceremony was held as part of the King’s Day celebrations organized by the Dutch community in Nanjing, further highlighting the strong economic and cultural ties between the Netherlands and China.

China Unveils 'World's Largest' Compressed Air Energy Storage Plant A groundbreaking 300MW/1,500MWh compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility has commenced operations in China's Hubei province. Dubbed the Hubei Yingchang project, the 5-hour duration plant leverages abandoned salt mines in Yingcheng and represents a total investment of $270 million. Completed in just two years, the project sets a new global benchmark as the largest grid-connected CAES system of its scale, according to the state-owned engineering firm China Energy Engineering Corporation. It outpaced conventional

The European Parliament has given its approval to a sweeping overhaul of EU gas and electricity market rules. This comprehensive reform package is designed to accelerate the bloc's clean energy transition while bolstering energy security and consumer protection measures. A key provision allows individual member states to restrict imports of Russian natural gas, building on forthcoming restrictions targeting excessively methane-leaking upstream supplies. The newly adopted legislation aims to promote biomethane production from organic waste in line with the EU's 2030 target

The government of Nova Scotia, Canada recently announced a new clean energy plan that aims to add 300MW to 400MW of battery storage systems in the province before 2030. Nova Scotia currently relies heavily on coal power, but has set a goal to phase out coal generation entirely by 2030. The plan is to increase renewable energy to provide 80% of electricity generation in Nova Scotia, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% relative to 2005 levels. With rapid growth in renewables

The Cnocan offshore wind farm project located in the Scottish Highlands has received planning permission, which will include a large-scale battery energy storage system. The Cnocan wind farm is sited in the Ross-Cromarty area and plans to install 17 wind turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 175 meters, with total installed capacity of around 82 megawatts. The wind farm is expected to generate electricity for around 85,000 households annually. Over the project's operational lifetime, carbon dioxide emissions are predicted

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $325 million in funding for long-duration energy storage projects to enhance grid resilience and protect communities. The funding, from the Biden Infrastructure Law, will support 15 projects across 17 states and one Tribal nation to mitigate the risks of grid outages caused by extreme weather events. The funding will help the DOE meet its target of lowering the costs of long-duration energy storage by 90% by 2030, and advance the Biden administration’s clean

Renewable energy company Enlight has commenced commercial operation of its Arad Valley 1 project in Israel, which includes 17MW of solar PV capacity and 31MWh of energy storage. This marks the second solar PV and storage project brought online by Enlight in Israel. Arad Valley 1 is part of a larger cluster of utility-scale solar PV and energy storage projects Enlight is developing in Israel, totaling 248MW of solar PV capacity and 474MWh of energy storage. The full project cluster is
